NRx Defense Systems is a clinical technology company purpose-built for the warfighter population — applying the most advanced neuroscience available to the treatment of PTSD, depression, and suicidality in those who serve.

NRx Defense Systems exists to solve a problem that conventional medicine has failed to solve: treatment-resistant PTSD and depression in active duty military, veterans, law enforcement, and first responders. These populations face a burden of mental illness four times greater than civilians — and the treatments available to them have not kept pace.

Our platform integrates three technologies — fMRI neuronavigation, robotically controlled TMS, and FDA-investigational neuroplastic medication — into a single, precision protocol. The result is rapid symptom reduction, no antidepressant side effects, no cognitive dulling, and no medication flags that affect security clearances or operational status.

We have been selected and are currently in contracting with the SPARC-TMS trial, partnering with Harvard McLean Hospital and HOPE Therapeutics, and building the clinical infrastructure to deploy this technology at scale across DoD, VA, and first responder systems.

The Team Behind the Platform

NRx Defense Systems is led by a team with deep credentials across national security, neuroscience, clinical psychiatry, and federal health policy.

Chairman

Jonathan C. Javitt, MD, MPH

Dr. Javitt has been a founder of seven successful healthcare IT and biopharma startups with public exits. He has led drug-development engagements for Merck, Allergan, Pharmacia, Novartis, and Pfizer, and was appointed to healthcare leadership roles under Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush. Commissioned by President Bush to chair the Health Committee of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC), he led development of Executive Order 13335 establishing the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. In the aftermath of 9/11, he was appointed Senior Fellow at the National Security Health Policy Center of the Potomac Institute and to the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense. A graduate of Princeton University, Cornell University Medical College, Harvard School of Public Health, and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Javitt has published more than 200 scientific works cited by more than 35,000 scientists. He continues to serve as Adjunct Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

President

Dennis K. McBride, PhD

Dr. McBride has led numerous national and international initiatives in neuroscience and its interface with information technology, national security, and medical technology — three of which are now multi-billion dollar enterprises. He began his career as a medical scientist in Naval Aviation and ergonomics, serving in eight nationally prominent laboratories including DARPA, the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Lab, Naval Research Lab, the Office of Naval Research, and the Naval Medical Research Institute. Upon retiring as a highly decorated senior officer (O-6), he led the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, where he continues to serve as President Emeritus. He was subsequently recruited back to the National Defense University to lead the Center for Technology and National Security Policy, culminating his government career as a Senior Executive-4 — the civilian equivalent of Rear Admiral/Vice Admiral. Dr. McBride holds a PhD in experimental psychology, four master's degrees, and postdoctoral education in aviation medicine, systems engineering science, and strategic disruption. He has served as Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and co-Director of Georgetown's Regulatory Science Program for more than 12 years.

Chief Medical Officer & Principal Investigator

Prof. Joshua Brown, MD, PhD

Prof. Brown is a psychiatrist, neurologist, and neuroscientist who studies the underlying mechanisms of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and translates those mechanisms into clinical optimization. He is the Medical Director of the McLean Hospital TMS Service, Director of TMS Research, and founding director of the Brain Stimulation Mechanisms Laboratory, with more than $20 million awarded in federal funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and DARPA. He holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and serves as President of the Clinical TMS Society and founding Editor-in-Chief of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation journal. Prof. Brown is an early pioneer in understanding the biologic effect of TMS and enhancing that effect with neuroplastic medications — including D-cycloserine, under development by NRx as NRX-101. He has been funded by DARPA to develop pathways to deploy TMS as a forward-deployable therapy for combat-related depression and PTSD to enhance force preparedness.
